## Pick up lung changes before they become serious

Spirometry measures how well your workers’ lungs are functioning. Regular testing picks up early changes caused by dust, fumes or chemical exposure so they can be addressed before they become serious.

Workers blow into a mouthpiece a few times; it is quick and non-invasive. Results are explained on the day and reported to the employer, with a referral where a result needs further assessment.

## A workplace spirometry test includes

- Respiratory health questionnaire
- Spirometry (FEV1 / FVC)
- Repeat blows for consistent results
- Comparison against previous results
- Employer summary report
- Referral advice where needed

## Monitoring for dust, fume and chemical exposure

- Baseline on employment, then typically every one to two years
- More frequent monitoring available for isocyanate exposure
- Shows whether respiratory protection is effective
- Records for your health and safety file and prequalification
- Delivered on-site with minimal downtime

Common in engineering, spray painting, construction, joinery, agriculture and manufacturing. Tell us about the exposures on your site and we will recommend a schedule.

> I recently took the first aid course with Dominique, who was incredibly friendly and had a fantastic teaching style. It was great to get some hands-on practice with the mannequins and hear about real-life situations from her own experience. Highly recommend!

## Questions about workplace spirometry

### Which workers need spirometry (lung function testing)?

Workers exposed to dust, silica, welding fumes, solvents or isocyanates. It is common in engineering, spray painting, construction, joinery, agriculture and manufacturing.

### What does a workplace spirometry test involve?

A short respiratory health questionnaire, then the worker blows into a mouthpiece a few times. The test is quick and non-invasive, and repeat blows make sure the results are consistent.

### How often should lung function be tested?

A baseline on employment, then typically every one to two years. More frequent monitoring is available for workers exposed to isocyanates.

### What happens if a spirometry result is outside the normal range?

Results are explained to the worker on the day and reported to the employer. Where a result needs further assessment, we refer the worker on.

### Can spirometry be part of a full monitoring programme?

Yes. Lung function testing is usually combined with hearing tests in our Workplace Health Monitoring programme, which starts from $85 per worker for hearing and lung function, ex GST.
